- 'Partnership' Medicaid News Conference - May 4, 2009
The Partnership for Michigan's Health--MSMS, the Michigan Health & Hospital Association, and the Michigan Osteopathic Association--held a news conference
in opposition to the governor's proposed four-percent cut to Medicaid funding, slated from July to September.
- 2009 MSMS House of Delegates Meeting
More than 400 physicians converged April 24-26 in Grand Rapids to set policy, debate issues, and elect leaders during the 144th annual MSMS House of Delegates meeting.
- 2009 Sports Medicine Seminar
On April 15, MSMS welcomed over 40 health care professionals for the first-ever Sports Medicine Seminar. The conference featured topics such as Mild Traumatic Sports Brain Injuries, Sports Injury Prevention, Sudden Cardiac Death in the Young, and Steroids and Ergogenic Aids.

Physicians, other health care providers, executives and administrators convened at the annual MSMS Foundation Best in Medicine Conference on November 11 in Troy to share their knowledge and background on issues related to best practices in medicine.

MSMS remembers and honors the late Ronald M. Davis, MD, a Wayne County preventive medicine specialist and the Immediate Past President of the AMA.
- Doctors & Their Families Make a Difference
Each year, hundreds of physicians and their family members participate in a statewide, hands-on volunteeer project: "Doctors & Their Families Make a Difference in Michigan." Volunteers collect donated personal care items and deliver them to domestic crisis shelters in communities across Michigan. It is hoped that those small comforts will improve the lives of the women and children who live there.

On October 10th and 11th, physicians and other health care professionals gathered in Traverse City for the 2008 Conference on Bioethics, which examined the many controversial aspects of universal health care.

Physicians gathered in Troy in October to learn the latest in clinical sciences at the MSMS 143rd Annual Scientific Meeting and annual Masters Series program.

On September 25, more than 100 physicians, spouses, medical students, and group managers convened in Lansing for the 2008 MSMS Foundation Capitol Check-Up, which connected participants with legislators and other state leaders to address health care policy, elections, public health issues, and more.

Nearly 100 physicians and office staff attended the annual MSMS Health Information Symposium on June 11 in Beverly Hills, which focused on helping medical practices develop clear strategies, investigate existing technology, and capture a glimpse into the future.

Around 200 physicians, medical students, medical group managers and others converged in Lansing on May 21 to hear from and talk with leaders in state government, business and health care during the 5th annual MSMS Leadership Summit.

- Greater Detroit Meet-n-Greet with Lawmakers
Physicians gathered at Fishbone’s Rhythm Kitchen in Detroit’s Greektown for the 11th annual Greater Detroit Meet-n-Greet with lawmakers, co-sponsored by co-sponsored by MSMS, the Detroit Medical Society, the Wayne County Medical Society of Southeast Michigan, and the Wayne County Osteopathic Society. The event helps foster a connection between physicians in the greater Detroit metropolitan area and their state lawmakers. Also, participants have the opportunity to discuss health care legislation and state budget issues.
- Calhoun Town Hall & Comm Service Award
Physicians and their spouses enjoyed a look back and a look ahead at a meeting of the Calhoun County Medical Society held at the Burch Adult Day Care Center and County Medical Care Facility on April 8. Jeff Jones, MD emceed the evening, which included his historical overview of the medical society and the facility, with thanks to the physicians instrumental in their development. Doctor Jones made available autographed copies of his book, "The Marvelous Adventures of Herman J. Elkmoss, MD," with proceeds benefiting the facility. The evening included a Town Hall presentation on MSMS initiatives by MSMS President AppaRao Mukkamala, MD. He also presented an MSMS Community Service Award to Mahesh C. Karamchandani, MD, for his exemplary work in the areas of cancer treatment and anti-tobacco activism.
- Ethnic Medical Society Presidents Dinner Meeting
Physician leaders representing eight ethnic medical societies gathered for dinner and conversation April 5 at the home of MSMS President AppaRao Mukkamala, MD, and his wife Sumathi Mukkamala, MD. More than 50 physicians and spouses attended the event. Comradery, commitment to shared goals, and furthering the influence of organized medicine for the good of all patients and physicians were key themes. "Together we are stronger," said Doctor Mukkamala.
- Making the Rounds: Sparrow Health System, Ingham County
As part of its “Making the Rounds” program, MSMS met with members of the Ingham County Medical Society and the Sparrow Health System, as part of the Sparrow/Michigan State University Health Care Policy & Issues Conference. In addition to current health care legislation, topics of discussion included preventive medicine, EMRs and coordination of care, physician supply, public health, and state government.
- VEBA: Shifting Michigan's Gears
On April 3 in Novi, MSMS hosted one of the state's first comprehensive examinations of the new Voluntary Employee's Beneficiary Association arrangement between the Detroit Big Three autos and the UAW. The union will become responsible as the purchaser of retirees' health care benefits, changing the dynamics of many aspects of the existing system. The audience heard government, union, auto and health plan perspectives, and how wellness is a key component.
- MSMS Conference on Maternal and Perinatal Health
This March 20 conference in Plymouth featured updates on Maternal Morbidity; Clinical Team Competency; Use of Simulation in Perinatal Care; Effect of MRSA on Perinatal Care; Intimate Partner Violence and Infant Mortality.
- MSMS Joint Section Meeting
Representatives from the International Medical Graduates, Organized Medical Staff, Young Physicians, Residents and Fellows, and MSMS Student Sections gathered on March 7 at MSMS headquarters in East Lansing to discuss issues unique to their sections, and resolutions to bring forward at the MSMS House of Delegates Meeting.
